Weld v Kerry Redux?

Would a Weld v Spitzer match-up be destined to reincarnate the ghosts of the then Massachusetts governor's unsuccessful US Senatorial race? (In 1996, Kerry defended his seat in what was initially a contentious race against Weld.) Kerry lacked Spitzer's guile and charisma, and to some extent, ability to win public adoration, but is an ideological neighbor. New York shares Massachusetts's blue-state ability to elect moderate Republicans(i.e. Pataki). However, it would be premature to assume that Weld does not suffer from the not-quite unknown afflictions that had Pataki polling abysmally against Spitzer.
