The Fundraising War in the 52nd: Who Will Win?

Champaign County Clerk Mark Shelden, former state rep Tom Berns, and erstwhile state sen Judy Myers are all potential successors to retiring incumbent RickWinkel in the Illinois Senate. Each's ability to acquire the backing of the Senate R's and the establishment party may depend largly on fundraising, in what will undoubtably be an expensive Tier 1 race. Tom Berns's campaign fund, "Friends of Tom Berns," is still identified as "active" by the ISBE. (It also has the dubious stated purpose of: "supporting[ing] the candidacy of Tom Berns for elected office and any other lawful purpose.") Berns's campaign had nearly $55,000 in reciepts in the last half of 2002, during his bank breaking unsuccessful re-election race against Naomi Jakobbson.
