Settlement in Brutality Case

Jerimiah Mearday, an African American man who suffered a brutal 1997 beating by Chicago police officers, has settled with the city's police department for 1.75 million. Mearday and his friends were walking on the Northwest side when they were apprehended by officers. Mearday incurred serious and disfiguring injuries as a result.
White members of the Fraternal Order of Police, a law enforcement union, picked outside the courtroom, showing that the wounds of bigotry never heal.
