DuPate(yes, that is intentional) County State's Attorney Birkett has all but bowed out of the gubernatorial race, but is still mulling other statewide bids, according to this Daily Herald article.

“I have not ruled out anything,” said the 50-year-old Birkett, of Wheaton. “The most important thing is that we defeat Rod Blagojevich. I think anyone, be it a Republican or Democrat, who has watched his performance this past couple of years knows he needs to go.”

Sen. Kirk Dillard, chairman of the county GOP offered his tactful encouragement. “Joe Birkett would be a good person for the Republican Party any place on the ticket. He would be an especially good candidate once again for attorney general or even lieutenant governor if he chooses.” Birkett is also reported to be considering a race against Dick Durbin in 2008.

Birkett's, um, prior experience running statewide would make him a qualified pick for the undercard, though he wouldn't provide the geogpraphical balance someone like Brady would(though it doesn't seem likely JBT would tap Brady fora running mate, anyway). Any bets on when Bryan Dugan will be indicted?
